Etrian Odyssey X: Diary 13

Fortunately or unfortunately, I am still not done yet. Due to the content of post-game, I am splitting it up into two parts. For this part,

  • The three dragons
  • The final map FOE... boss?
  • Mini-dungeon: Frozen Lake (rough translation)
The final dungeon and the final mini-dungeon will be in the 2nd part... when I beat it... after I do a lot of leveling up.

So as always, first off is the mini-dungeon.
As you can kinda see, it is filled with ice panels. And there are numerous map puzzles you have to clear in order to get to the boss.
No FOEs and most enemies are from older dungeons, so you should not have much trouble battle-wise. But the puzzles all require several ice block pushes from a fairly large area, so those were actually kinda difficult.

However, what was surprising is that there is absolutely no text in this dungeon. No NPC, no text whatsoever. You just go in, make your way to the boss, and defeat it. The end. Not even a quest.

As for the boss of this mini-dungeon, it is your one and only...
Yes, she appears in this game along with her sister, but her sister is not involved in this dungeon at all. *shrug*
Anyways, she hasn't really changed that much from the Untold. She has one move that will absolutely destroy anyone it hits, but it has extremely low accuracy and usually won't hit. So she uses her moves and her minions to someone reduce your evasion to 0 and then kill you with that supermove.

However, as she isn't a story boss, I wasn't sure what level I should have be to fight her. So I ended up fighting her after defeating the three dragons... and I was overleveled.

Then we have the three dragons, but...
This goes for all of the dragons, but dang, their Breaths have been supernerfed. All three's Breath moves are now normally survivable. Like not barely survivable, but completely survivable without any defensing. Can you imagine that in the first game, it was a supermove?
They did not appear in 5 and when they finally reappear in X, they've been nerfed. What sadness.
On the other hand, they now have a "very high chance" of using the move on certain turns... but not always use the move.

Also, all three of them summon those Core things, just like in Untold, although what the do have been slightly changed.

The Fire one is the brawn type, as usual.
The status ailment he can deal is Confusion.
He has the most HP of the dragons, but he also has the least resistance to status ailments, which turns out to be quite bad for him, since both Paralysis and Blind work on him.
As for him, the only thing really dangerous is if you let him use his offensive buff. There is no problem if you cancel it out or constantly give him a debuff though, so you may want one or two of your characters to have Confusion-resistance accessories just in case.

Instead of attacking, the Core he summons heals him each turn.

Next is the Ice one.
The status ailment he uses is Sleep. However, he also can do Head binds, which can also stop your healer.
I would say he is the weakest of the three, because he lost his Counter move. Yep, that's right. All he does now is increase his resistance to his weakness and regeneration, which can be removed with items or certain skills. No counter.
As long as you don't get into an accident with Sleep or his binding, there should be no problem. He's the first one I defeated, BTW.

His Core still attacks like Untold, but it does not get stronger each turn.

Finally we have the Thunder one.
The status ailment he uses is Paralysis.
As always, if you use too many buffs, he will Roar and Instant Death your party, so you can't really use them.
I would say he is the hardest one to fight because his attacks involve completely binding your party or dealing Paralysis. On top of that, he has a move that does Piercing damage and heals him for around or over 2000HP, and his Core increases his defenses each turn.
Just when you think you did a lot of damage, he Paralyzes or Binds your... and then while you try to heal, he attacks and heals himself. And then his Core comes back alive and starts giving him defensive buffs, extending the battle yet longer.
Definitely the most tricky of the three.

His Core gives him a defensive buff each turn. This buff does not overwrite itself, so you do less damage every turn.

And then, for the end of this article is the final map FOE. Though I guess you can say boss.
Yup, this guy.
On the first turn, he uses a supermove that hits 10 times, doing immense damage each hit.
At this point, you can tell he isn't a normal enemy.
Now, I won't really go into too much detail on what he does, but let me point out that despite having resistance to a lot of status ailments and binds, he has no resistance to Curse.

Yes, I'm sure it was done on purpose.
You see, there is a hidden class in this game who has a Force Boost that prevents your character from receiving fatal damage for three turns.
So all you have to do is get two characters, one with this hidden class and one other character that will Curse the FOE. Then, the FOE will use his supermove that will do so much damage to your Level 1 hidden class character that the Curse damage kills him immediately.
The end.

If you want to fight him fair-and-square, he does a lot of damage, but his defenses are fairly normal. And while he has resistance to most ailments and binds, he isn't immune.
So it is possibly to defeat him other ways, if you want.
But it's just cooler to Curse-death him.
