Pokemon Sword (and Shield) Main Story Complete + Thoughts

Yes, I know there is still a lot to do post-game, but most of it is just the usual stuff, like competitive breeding and training and battling.
Playtime is around 20 hours.
I chose Sword, BTW, because you get Bea instead of the Shy Guy. Frankly, there isn't really much point picking the version based off the Pokemon that appear, since you are gonna trade and get all of them anyways.





Hmm, I mean, in the end, it is a Pokemon game. If you like Pokemon, you will enjoy the game.
And that really is the summary of... well, any main Pokemon game.
But of course, that wouldn't make for a good article, and I do have other thoughts.

Story
First, I thought the story was pretty fun. It really integrated the whole "crowd-watched trainer battles" well into the story, with multiple BGMs with types of cheering in the background. It was also interesting seeing the adults trying to "do the stuff the kids shouldn't have to waste their time on", though in the end, they do not have the powers to solve the problem themselves and the chosen one (protagonist) has to come in, but it is a game after all, we can't just let the NPC solve everything.

That said, because the "villainous team" of the game is not even evil (neither of the two groups) and the motive of the big bad boss of the game is based on something that happens in the great future instead of doing bad things in the present, there just isn't that... spice? of you saving the world. Heck, it feels more like a happening then anything else.

Hmm, but I guess you can say that they meant it to be like that. As you are trying to prepare for your champion match and then some things just happen... and you just go and clear it all up.
Still, the fact it was more of a side-quest than a main plot in the story does make it feel... not enough?
Of course, as with Oleana's Garbodor, it is possible that they will release a minor-change version that focuses more on Macro Cosmos.

Also, I really like the characters. Especially Bede, for the funny Fairy-related stuff, and Piers, who is just such a nice guy (but freaks out over his younger sister). Of course, the female characters were all cute and pretty and everything, but these two guys stood out as far as characters go.

Other
I also thought the wild area system was pretty nice. You still had your grass battles, but you can also enter battles with the Pokemon that appear on the map. It feels natural and doesn't really get rid of that old feel you are hunting Pokemon.

As for the new Dynamax system, I think it is okay so far. At the least, it is far fairer than the Mega-evolution system. Yeah, remember that system? The one that can give a Pokemon a Choice-item stat boost while making them immune to item-trading? Haha, yeah, that system.

Along with the Dynamax, it was also interesting to see the overhaul of TMs and such stuff that affect competitive battling. At the least, with no more Garchomps or Mega Salamences and whateverwhateverwhatever, it won't be as bad of an environment. I do expect some strong Pokemon, yes, but it will still be better, at least.


And that's about it? I mean, music, graphics, character customization, just the usual Pokemon in a satisfactory manner. As this is Gamefreak's first non-handheld Pokemon (and I don't see Genius Sonority around), I was worried the graphics would become too chibi or cartoony, but they really transitioned well. Love it.

Oh, and here is my story team.
You might not be able to see it, but Flapple is there too. Just a normal, balanced team.
I chose the Water starter because the Grass' final evolution was too plain and Fire's was a Digimon.
I got an Electric type so I can paralyze wild Pokemon.
Then a Fire type.
Then a Pokemon that can learn False Swipe. (I'm only using new Pokemon, and there are very few new Pokemon that can learn the move)
And Flapple being the Grass.
And Flying/Steel is a true and tested blessed type combination.
