Etrian Odyssey X: Diary 14

Phew............. Uueh......................
Finally.

This time:

  • Last mini-dungeon (Forest of Illusions)
  • Final dungeon, not including the bosses

I think it gets a bit too long, due to 5 FOE in the final dungeon, so I'm putting the remaining boss fights in another article.

Since it might get long, I'll try to get to the points... maybe.
First is the final mini-dungeon.
As you can kinda see, it is, I think, the only dungeon in this game that utilizes a teleportation gimmick.

Along with the teleportation gimmick is the FOE, the pumpkin FOE we all know and love.
When you get near this FOE, he will start chasing you. He will chase you FOREVER, going across walls. He stops for one turn after going through a wall, which you need to utilize to get past him.
On top of that, he instantly respawns after you defeat him.

Yes, he is the super-version of the bat FOE that appeared a while back.

In battle, he only actually has one offensive move, of the Fire element. He also has binds and debuffs, but as long as you negate Fire, you won't lose.
On the other hand, he is immune to all elements and resistant to Almighty. There are only a handful of attacks in this game that does normal damage to him. However, he has little health and if you have one of those handful attacks, you can defeat him easily.

...Yep.
Infinite spawning.
Low health.

That's right. This is the ultimate EXP-grinding FOE of this game. With the right set-up, you can defeat him in one turn. Even without the right set-up, you can defeat him in two turns.
And he respawns right away.

For the boss, we get Juggernaut.
I believe this is an Untold boss.
I believe he doesn't really act that different from his previous appearance. He goes good damage, but he also has tricks up his sleeve including raising his elemental defenses upon receiving such damage and cancelling out buffs and using a punishment attack afterwards.
As the final mini-dungeon boss, he would be pretty difficult, but I fought him after fulling leveling out, so it wasn't really that bad.

And then... FINALLY...
The FINAL dungeon.
Yes, it took a whopping 14 dungeons + 10 mini-dungeons to get here.
As always, original dungeons utilize the height gimmick.

To be honest, the enemies were not that bad. I mean, they were strong, but most of the dangerous ones came from previous games and having beaten those games, you can tell what they will do beforehand and as long as you focus on incapacitating them first, all is fine.

For instance,
The crab enemy from Untold 1, who does nothing until an ally appears
The lion from Etrian 4, who starts off asleep but does immense damage should he wake up
The monkey from Etrian 5, who copies all of his allies' attacks
The black bird from Etrian 5, who does a Pierce attack at high speeds

Yup, they all came back to torture you.
The worst combination is Black Bird x 2 + Monkey. If I encounter one of them, I just Force Break immediately to kill them. It is clear that giving the enemy even one turn will have terrible results...

Oh, and the material for Formaldehyde finally appears, but the drop requirement is to simply kill by Instant Death.
This is easily achieved by using the Ronin's Force Break.

On the other hand, the FOE are considerably strong. Their aura will not become Blue for a while, until you get around 120-ish in level.

The first FOE is the rolly-polly FOE, again.
His map gimmick is exactly the same, but he is much stronger now. Like, really strong.

However...
He has no resistance to Instant Death. And his special drop is to quickly defeat him.
So yeah, Ronin Force Break and you are done.

The next FOE you meet is this... beast thing.
He is always on the top floor and will start chasing you once you get on the same height as him + he can actually reach you.
I didn't realize this for a while and it got me stuck, but if you touch him, he will punch you back and do damage and then become tired for a couple of turns. If you touch him while he is tired, you can enter battle. But you actually have to get punched once in order to get past certain puzzles.

In battle, the only thing really noticeable about him is that he has a powerful move that removes his own debuffs while doing big damage. And he has a move that debuffs both your party and him, which helps trigger the mentioned move.
So if you make sure to remove his debuffs and to not debuff him, it shouldn't be a big problem.

Next up is another pumpkin FOE.
Wait... I thought there were three of them. Where did the other go...?

Just like the other one, he moves through walls on the map, though he just continuously moves in a circle. And you are supposed to push the rolly-polly FOE in his way to make him skip through different walls so that you can get passed him.

In battle, just like the other one, he is all gimmick. He has NO offensive skills, only able to do damage with his basic attack. However, he has such great ATK that even his basic attack is a OHKO.
All of his skills are annoyers, such as sucking your TP, binding you, or turning everyone including himself into stone.
Since he can never kill more than one character at a time, it isn't really that hard to defeat him... It is just that it can take a long long time.

Oh, and he is immune to Elemental attacks. Physical attacks work fine, but he petrifies himself, which gives him resistance to those Physical attacks.

Next is the... Basilisk FOE?
On the map, he just remains perched on the top floor until you get near him. He only looks in certain directions and won't react even if you get near him if he is not looking that way.
Then he will chase you. When you leave the room, he goes to the nearest top floor and perches there. If the nearest is an immobile rolly-polly FOE, he will actually perch on top of it too.
And you are supposed to use this gimmick to lure him out of your way.

In battle, he only does damage after setting-up for a turn. However, as his HP drops, he may use a different attack after setting-up for a turn. No matter which move he uses, he will broadcast it, so you can do whatever you need to survive both attacks. On the other hand, since he uses two turns to attack, the move that does come out is pretty powerful.
His other gimmick in battle is that in certain timings in the battle, he will summon a fruit enemy. When this fruit enemy is defeated by a physical attack (and yes, he has resistance to elemental attacks), he heals another enemy for 9999HP + Status Ailment Cure. Even if you do not attack it, the FOE will kill the fruit enemy instead and also boost his ATK.

And finally, the eyeball FOE... again. Of course, this time he is stronger.
I'd say I had the most trouble with his map gimmick.
You see, this FOE moves at double-speed in a line. But if you line up with him, he will become alert and start chasing you at double-speed. If he loses sight of you, he will start patrolling again in a line.
And you are supposed to use this gimmick to lure him into patrolling another area to get past him.

However, due to his speed, if he sees you and you mess up, there is no way to escape him. He may move at double-speed, but that doesn't mean he won't stop after moving one space if you are right beside him after that first step.
But you have to let him see you and chase you once in order to get passed him.
So yeah, surprisingly tricky enemy to get around.

In battle, he... is weird.
The thing is that he has two moves that he will never use normally.
But if you bind him or give him a status ailment, he will start using those moves (one move for binds, one move for status ailments).
And the moves he uses outside of those two are not really not scary.
So as long as you fight fair-and-square, he isn't dangerous. But if you try any trickery, the battle just becomes that much harder. Weird...
